Mining Industry
We process watery sediments and sludge generated in mining operations into a solid form. Our solutions are suitable for treating liquid sediments produced in the process, handling tailings for dry stacking, and treating suction dredging masses from various ponds.
The core principle of our solutions is to separate solids and water. The treatment produces dry or drier material and clean water that can be discharged into nature or recirculated as process water.
Treatment of Mining Sludge and Sediment
Our typical target applications include:
- Suction dredging of wastewater or sediment ponds and treatment of liquid sediment
- Dry stacking of tailings
- Treatment of liquid fractions generated in the process
- Treatment of construction site waters
How the Treatment Process Works
The treatment process includes the following phases:
1
Assessment, sampling, laboratory tests, and design calculations
2
Expert services during the permitting and planning phases
3
Dredging and/or delivery of sludge treatment technology
4
Project monitoring and reporting
Advantages of Our Service
Sludge and sediment generated in the mining industry are stored in sludge ponds, which fill up over time. Since material is generated continuously, the ponds must be emptied periodically, and the accumulated sludge and sediment must be treated in accordance with environmental requirements.
We use Geotube technology for sludge treatment, which offers the following benefits:
- Faster dewatering and consolidation process
- Highly suitable for grey and clayey waters as well
- The process removes contaminants
- Environmentally safe process
- No need for large liquid tailings ponds, which alone significantly reduces risks
- Less leakage and seepage water
- A large portion of the water can be recycled back into the process
Dry Stacking
When clean water is separated from the sludge, a moist but solid mass is formed that can be stacked. This process is called dry stacking. Dry material is safer to store and much easier to handle.

Rescuing Lapland’s bird paradise in Kemijärvi
We helped to clean a former paper mill area in Kemijärvi. Area is commonly known as a local bird habitat. Using a suction dredge method more than 300 000 cubics of contaminated soil will be processed and removed together with Vesirakennus Ojanen Oy.
